Google Maps has accompanied us on our travels for years, and the voice of Jaroslaw Juszkiewicz has become an integral part of navigation for many users in Poland. However, Google recently decided to make a significant change, which caused quite a stir among users.

In May 2020, Google tried to replace Juszkiewicz’s voice with a speech synthesizer, which was met with massive criticism. Users complained about the artificial and unpleasant voice, which degraded the navigation experience. Now, after three and a half years, Google has again attempted to introduce a speech synthesizer based on artificial intelligence.

User reactions

The change has been met with mixed reactions. Many users have expressed their dissatisfaction, stressing that the AI voice sounds artificial and lacks the natural intonation and warmth that Juszkiewicz’s voice offered. The voiceover itself admitted that it understands Google’s decision, but at the same time stressed that drivers on a long journey want to hear a “live human being.”

The future of navigation

Although the new voice in Google Maps is understandable and correct, it lacks a “human” element. Google has announced further improvements to its system to better meet users’ expectations. Will there be a compromise between technology and user habits? Time will tell.
